School's Out... March 2, 2010
The AW shows are on at the moment and that means there are hundreds of parades to trawl through on Style.com…
Among the usual suspects, one of my favourite shows to view is the Central St Martin’s parade.
If you didn’t already know, CSM is an amazing fashion school; the alumni list is an all-star affair of designers including Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Stella McCartney and Matthew Williamson to name a few.
This year’s show is no exception! The students are not scared to experiment or take risks, they don’t have management teams behind them or business plans that force them down an uber-commercial, safe-sellable route.
To me, the risks taken in the CSM shows are what fashion is truly about; like paper taffeta men’s jackets in jewel tones, architectural sheer constructions, star panel lines and fresh uses of colour that most people would shy away from.
